I came home from the interview, and he showed me a picture he took of a stanced Toyobaru. There was a brief exchange.

TheHondaBro: I’m guessing you thought the car was broken?

TheHondaDad: I thought the owner was broken.

As I have said in this space many times - you’d better have a good reason to modify your car from stock. Start with something that doesn’t void the warranty.

But... Why? For many car guys modifying a car is the best part, especially with the toyobaru which was designed from the factory with aftermarket tinkering in mind.

All of that is true, but I always hate seeing a car that’s been stanced. It does not improve the performance. On the other hand - a revised suspension and fat tires might be a lot of fun. I had new ‘91 CRX Si ... never did a thing to it. It was my college commuter car, and we sold it for damn near what we paid for it. Two kids came with, I think, 12 grand in cash? That was 1993, and I wish I had that little car back.

If I repeated what my dad says about stanced cars, I’d get banned.

My first car was a used and well beat up 91 CRX si. I will always remember it fondly. It was sadly disassembled and incorporated into an already tuned car that suffered some damage. At the time I couldn’t keep up with repair costs: head gasket, clutch, electrical, ignition harness, heater had issues, sunroof went spastic, windows only worked intermittently, etc. But man it was a fun little car to rip around in. I would pay almost new car price for a good to go mint example, black, with a larger engine dropped in it... Oh the cornering...

OKAY!

Kinja'd!!!

Put it on with a little over 5,000 miles on the car. The service manager at the dealer I bought it from didn’t even bat an eye. That was in 2007. I had a 6 year 36,000 mile warranty on the car through Ford at the time. There’s been a lot of supporting mods to the car since then as well. One of the best things I did was ditch the stock panhard rod and install a Watts Link.

Looks good - and anything that stiffens a suspension (that needs stiffening) is fine by me.

Mine was white, black interior, and I took the radio delete and put a Sony CD player in it. That didn’t work when the temperature went above 85 degrees or so. Other than an E-Type Jaguar, that little car was the purest driving experience I’ve ever had.

Rockin’ some 185/65/14, tokiko blue shocks with neuspeed springs. Replaced all my bushings with an ES master kit, 23 MM rear sway and 25 MM front.

Lastly, changed my 5 speed to a SI for a D-Series.

Best 102 HP car ever.
